“ECLECTIC ESSEX PUNKS DHARMA HOUNDS RAGE AT PUSH NOTIFICATIONS AND PAY TRIBUTE TO LOST POETS IN LATEST SINGLE ‘BLACK FRIDAY“
NMR Review- A catchy guitar riff…and we’re off…full on high energy arrangement with melodies to match, then a bit of a twist in style to almost Reggae…but not for long.. !
Essex-based punk trio, Dharma Hounds, have released their second single of the year on July 23rd. Following the success of their most recent track, CHOMP, which elevated the band’s profile by gaining airplay on BBC Introducing, Black Friday is set to push the band further up the food chain of modern punk and alternative music.
New track Black Friday is not a song about hope. Black Friday is a song about the overwhelming amount of places we’re supposed to be, people we’re supposed to see, and products we’re supposed to buy in order to make existence bearable. Written a week after poet and activist Benjamin Zepheniah passed away, Black Friday is also a humble tribute to his legacy. It attempts to see the humor in the absurd nature of our modern world, reminding the listener that, while the world may be falling apart, there is always joy to be found in music and words, no matter how dark they sometimes appear.
When the band first read Max’s lyrics to the song, the first message in the WhatsApp group was, “are you okay?” However, placed in context with the unhinged and frantic musical style, it becomes clear that there is positivity hidden behind the darkness—a kind of weird schadenfreude.
“I have no wisdom to offer you today, I’m just keeping my head above the waves.”
