From Cornwall to the World Stage

Rosalie James, a multi-talented singer-songwriter hailing from Cornwall, UK, has carved out a unique place in the music industry with her emotive and honest songwriting. Her journey began with the piano and guitar, with early influences from The Beatles and The Bangles on her bright yellow Sony Walkman. Her teenage years were spent immersed in the dramatic sounds of 80s synth-pop and new wave, as well as the lyrical depths of 90s dreampop and indie music. These influences have shaped her into the artist she is today, drawing inspiration from anyone capable of writing a good song.

Rosalie’s life has not been without its challenges. She has dealt with sensory sensitivities and social interaction difficulties since she was nine years old. She has also battled severe depression, anxiety, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and substance use issues. It wasn’t until January 2023 that she received a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder, allowing her to finally live an authentic life.

After earning two degrees and spending a decade working as a social worker in social care and mental health, Rosalie decided in June 2023 to return to her creative roots. Her passion for changing the world now channels through her music, raising awareness and reducing stigma around neurodiversity, domestic violence, addiction, and mental health.

Rosalie James’s recent Kickstarter campaign showcased her talent and the support she has garnered, raising £5000 in just 28 days. Her performance at various summer festivals in 2023, supporting top UK pianist Ben Waters at Mylor Sessions, and her engaging interviews on Radio Cornwall have all contributed to her growing reputation. Her singles, “Will We Ever Rest?” and a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” received significant airplay on BBC Introducing South West, earning a warm reception from listeners.

With a back catalog of over 200 songs, Rosalie is a prolific writer and recorder, constantly adding to her repertoire. Her music has already been featured on UK primetime soap opera “Hollyoaks” and US drama “The Black Donnellys.” Her style resonates with fans of classic songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, as well as contemporary indie artists like Sharon Van Etten and Bon Iver. Her brutally honest lyrics, hooky tunes, soulful voice, and captivating stage presence make her a standout performer.

Produced and recorded in Los Angeles, the album features contributions from renowned musicians such as Jorge Balbi, Lukas Frank, Steve Jackson, Garett Lang, and Jason Abraham Roberts. The lead single, “Girl I Was,” tells the story of a destructive past relationship and the personal growth that followed. The second single, “Soft Target,” is a powerful anthem for women who weren’t diagnosed as neurodivergent until adulthood. The third single, “ISLAND,” offers a poignant look at parenting as a young adult and the emotional toll it takes.

“Full of Chemicals” is a lush mix of dreampop, shoegaze, indie rock, folk, and Americana. It’s an autobiographical diary of Rosalie James’s struggles with neurodiversity, toxic relationships, addiction, and mental health. As she puts it, “There is so much I want to say, and the depths of terminal sadness and fleeting joy can only be properly expressed through music.”

Rosalie James is poised to make a significant impact with her upcoming album. Her music, brimming with raw emotion and authentic storytelling, aims to resonate deeply with listeners and bring greater awareness to important social issues. As she continues to write, record, and perform, Rosalie remains dedicated to her mission of using music as a force for change and understanding.
